Our mission is to educate participants on safety, skills, and stewardship.  Shank’s Mare’s clinic program offers information that will ensure an enjoyable and safe experience in the outdoors.

What’s New in Kayak Fishing Boats & Gear?

Check out new features in 2018 Jackson Kayaks including their Flex-Drive propulsion system.  Also, new for 2018 at Shank’s Mare, are the Bonafide line of fishing kayaks.  Devin Winand, along with Shank’s Mare fishing team members, will conduct this clinic covering not only new features in kayaks (and stand-up paddleboards for fishing), but also all the trendy gear this season.

How to Get Started in Kayak Fishing Clinic

Sat. Feb. 24, 2018, 10:30am-12:30pm

Learn what you need to know to get involved in kayak fishing.  We’ll cover basic needs in outfitting your kayak including varieties of rod holders and other gear. We’ll discuss anchoring your kayak while fishing and other specific skills.  You will learn ways to be involved in the various kayak fishing message boards as well as info on how kayak fishing tournaments are run. Kayak Safety & Cool Weather Paddling Clinic

Sat. March 11 or April 14, 2018, 10:30am-12:30pm

Join us for this on-land safety clinic geared to all paddlers.  Learn about properly outfitting your kayak, trip planning and preparation, and weather and water conditions. When paddling in early spring, it is important to be properly outfitted with both your kayak and your clothing. Learn about drysuits, wetsuits, appropriate layers and fabrics, and how to be sure your kayak and you are geared up for the conditions.

How to Buy Your First Kayak or SUP

We always say buying your first kayak is the toughest. This clinic will educate you in what you should know to make a good purchase. We’ll cover analyzing where and what type of paddling you will be doing and what kayaks or SUP’s will handle those conditions the best. Remember, just because your buddy loves his or her boat, doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you.  And, not all kayaks and SUP’s are created equal, so we’ll give you tips on what to look for in materials and design. All in all, our goal is to make sure you buy your second kayak the first time!

Hauling Your Paddlesports Gear

This clinic begins with racking your vehicle for any number of kayaks or SUP’s.  We will give you tips on load assist options and securing your load for transport. We’ll also cover trailers and your options available with them. This clinic will provide you with the safest methods to protect your car or truck and your paddlesports gear.
